What to look for in your pets' food
Find the list of ingredients on the bag
The first 5 to 10 ingredients will play a significant role in the nutritional make-up of a food; however, it's important to
remember that pet food labels provide limited information regarding the nutritional value of a food.
Identify the source/sources of protein
Because dogs and cats need meat, pick a food in which the first ingredient is an animal-based protein
source, such as chicken, chicken meal, lamb, lamb meal, fish meal, or egg.
Identify the source/sources of fat
For a glossy coat and healthy skin, your pets need fat in their diet. Make sure the fat is meat-based, since this fat is removed during the rendering process and it needs to be added back in. Fats are made up of fatty acids. There are two important fatty acids for dogs and cats: omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.
Identify the source/sources of carbohydrate
Because they are carnivores, cats and dogs need only limited carbs. Ideally there should be no grain in
their food. Grains that are known to cause kidney damage from their poor protein are corn, wheat, and soy.
Fruits and vegetables are good carb sources for pets as long as they are in small quantities.
Look at the preservatives
Copper Sulfate and Ethoxyquin are toxic and very bad for pets. These ingredients should be avoided.
Look for the words corn, wheat, soy, and by-product
If the food has any of these ingredients do not buy it. All of these ingredients are cheap and supply little or no nutritional value to pets. Corn, wheat, and soy are not digestible by pets and cause kidney problems down the road. By-products are leftovers from the slaughter/processing of the food and can also cause problems.
